Mobile Phone Glossary
2G
2G means second generation. It is the first of the digital handsets that replaced the original boring analogue setup.
2.5G
2.5G is a term that means the handset has more data features than a standard 2G handset but not as good as 3G.  It may incude support for  features such as EDGE and/or GPRS.
3G
3G means third generation. It is the latest and most effective phone technology. 3G has high-speed data transfer rates.  This allows users the versatility  to have mobile broadband and also two-way video calling.
3-way Calling
3-Way Calling is commonly known as conference calling.  It means that more than two people can to be connected together on a phone call.  This cab be a very cost effective way for businesses to communicate, even in different countries. 
A-GPS
A-GPS is short for Assisted GPS. It means the handset will fix your location by using a triangulation method to judge your distance from three mobile phone aerials in your area. 
AAC
Advanced Audio Coding. It is a possible succcessor music format to MP3. It gives a higher sound quality for the same memory. 
Accelerometer
An Accelerometer in a mobile phone detects the motion of the handset so that it will auto rotate the display to show in landscape rather than the normal portrait mode when the phone is rotated 90 degrees. This feature is good for viewing photos on the phone screen in full screen mode.
Audio Output Jack
An audio output jack, usually 3.5mm, on a mobile phone that will allow you to use a standard headset with the phone to listen to music.
Auto Focus
Auto focus is afeature that allows a camera phone lens to adjust to focus in on a particular object giving a sharper image than phones with a fixed focus.
Bluetooth
The Bluetooth technology allows wireless connections to be made between electrical devices such as laptops, car kits and headsets.  It is usually relatively short range and works best at up to 15 metres depending on the location.  
Bps
The phones speed of data transfer is known as Bits per second.
Cellular
A mobile phone transmitter covers an area known as a "cell"

Mobile Phones can be expensive if you want all the latest features.  Many people choose to take out a 12 or 18 month contract and for this they will often get a free phone and the option for insurance and peace of mind. For this they agree to be billed every month.  
Coverage
The, increasingly large, area of the globe covered by mobile cells to allow calls, data, etc to be connected. 
Digital Zoom
Digital zoom is the apparent "zoom" effect on a  digital camera phone.  It will often give a poor picture quality. 
Dual Band
Means that a phone to work on both 900MHz and 1800MHz networks. 
EDGE
EDGE is enhanced speed for data transfer across a GSM network. 
Face Recognition
Face recognition technology allows for clearer and sharper images of people's faces. 
GB
GB is Gigabyte. One Gigabyte is equivalent to 1024 MB (Megabyte) and usually refers to memory.
GPS
Global Positioning System.  By taking readings from 3 satellites and triangulation GPS is used to calculate your location.
GPRS
General Packet Radio Service was the first high speed data service available on digital mobile phones
GSM
The standard used by digital mobile networks across the globe is Global Standard for Mobile communications. The most common frequency used is 900mhz, followed by 1800mhz. However, in the Americas, 1900mhz and 850mhz are also used. These bandings are  often called single, dual, tri or quad band phones. A quad band phone will offer good performance on any of the GSM frequencies, giving more roaming options.
Hands-free
This is the ability to make and/or receive a phone call without actually holding the mobile phone. Most modern phones have Bluetooth technology to allow easy hands free operation. 
HSCSD
High Speed Circuit-Switched Data (HSCSD) is for internet access through older 2G mobile phone networks. 
HSDPA
High Speed Download Packet Access (HSDPA) or mobile broadband. It allows for high speed downloading of data on a 3G phone. 
HSUPA
High Speed Upload Packet Access (HSUPA) is the uploading service similar to HSDPA.
IM
IM stands for Instant Messaging. 
Image Stabiliser
Helps to cut out blur on a picture due to hand shaking.
IMAP
IMAP stands for Internet Message Access Protocol. IMAP is a method of sending and receiving email. 
IMEI
The  IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is a unique serial number that every mobile phone has and is usually found printed under the phone battery.  In the UK it can be used to block a stolen phone. 
Internal Memory
Internal memory is the capacity available for storing photos, messages and songs on the phone memory.
IrDA
Infrared data is exchanged between devices using infrared technology. Usually it is very short range up to around 2m. 
Java
Java is a programming language.  It is used for games and programs such as web browsers and email. 
Kbps
Kbps stands for kilobytes per second. It is used for indicating the data transfer speed.
LCD
LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display for mobile phone screens
LED
An LED is a Light Emitting Diode, a small light on many camera phones. It illuminates objects in dim lighting conditions to enhance the quality of the captured image. 
Lithium Ion
Lithium-ion is a common type of mobile phone battery.
MB
MB is an acronym for Megabyte and is a measurement of memory storage. 
Megapixel
A megapixel is equivalent to one million pixels. The more pixels in the image the clearer the picture will be.
Memory Expansion Slot
If you have a memory expansion slot on your phone it allows you to increase the memory capacity by adding a memory card. Formats include Micro SD and M2.
Mobile Broadband
This is high speed data access on a mobile phone. Normally HSDPA on a phone or USB modem
MP3
MP3 is short for MPEG Layer-3. The MPEG stands for Moving Pictures Expert Group. MP3 allows digital audio files to be highly compressed whilst still giving an acceptable level of audio quality
POP3
POP3 is short for Post Office Protocol and is the data format used for sending emails across the internet
Pre-Pay
Mobile phone service paid for in advance with no credit check, no contract and no monthly bills.
PUK
PUK stands for Pin Unblocking Key.  It is the security code used by networks to protect their customers sim card if the wrong pin is entered three times. If you are asked for your PUK by your phone it is best to contact your provider.  You will be asked to answer some security questions to get started again. 
Quad Band
Quad band means four bands, and refers to handsets that operate on all four of the GSM transmitting frequencies.
QVGA
QVGA refers to the resolution for mobile phone displays.  It is 320 x 240 pixels. A VGA display is 640 x 480 pixels, and QVGA is a quarter of the resolution, Quarter VGA. To calculate the number of pixels you have to multiply these numbers. Therefore a QVGA display is 76,800 pixels, and a VGA display is 307,200 pixels.
Roaming
           Allows the mobile phone to be used abroad
RSS
RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a standard file format used to publish frequently updated content such as news, sports updates, and blogs. 
S40
S40 refers to the Nokia Series 40 software.
S60
S60 refers to the Nokia Series 60 operating system used in their smartphones
SAR
SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) measures how much radio frequency energy/ electromagnetic radiation is absorbed by the body.  All mobile phones on sale throughout the EU are designed to comply with the International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection's recommendation of a SAR limit of 2w/kg (watts per kilogram). You can check the SAR rating of your mobile phone in your phone's instruction manual or on the manufacturer's website.
Smartphone
A smartphone usually has an 'open' operating system. You can add functionality by adding other software from third parties such as Symbian, UIQ or Windows Mobile operating systems
Symbian
Symbian is the name of the company that develops Nokia's S60 phone operating system and Sony Ericsson's UIQ phone operating system
TFT
TFT stands for Thin Film Transistor and is used in LCD screens and is often superior to standard LCD screens .
Touch Pad
Similar in to the mousepad on a laptop computer, a touchpad will have icons which you touch to launch the corresponding application.
Touchscreen
A touchscreen allows input to be made onto a device simply by pressing on the screen. It may show large icons or on screen QWERTY keyboards as well as handwriting recognition.  This allows you to enter commands and text on the phone by writing on the screen with a stylus.
Track ID
Track ID is a method of receiving full track information, including name of song, name of artist or band, and album the song is from.   
Tri Band
Tri or Triple band means three bands, and refers to handsets that operate on three of the four GSM transmitting frequencies, usually GSM 900, GSM 1800 and GSM 1900
TV OUT
Phones with TV OUT have a facility to show what you see on the screen of your phone on the screen of a TV, using a simple cable. 
UIQ
UIQ stands for User Interface Quartz  It is UI software platform that is based on the Symbian operating system
UMTS
UMTS stands for Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service.  It is probably the only technology used universally for third generation mobile phone networks.
USB Connector
USB stands for Universal Serial Bus. This is a cable that allows Phones with a USB port will connect to a PC USB port. 
USIM
Short for "Universal Subscriber Information Module" or "3G SIM" - the next generation of SIM card, having a larger capacity (generally 64Kb). 
VGA
A VGA screen is a screen with a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels. This is the unpopular resolution of four times the standard mobile phone screen.
WiFi
This is short for Wireless Fidelity, and is used to describe wireless standards for local network wireless connectivity.
Windows Mobile
Windows Mobile is a phone operating system, just like Symbian is, and is commonly found on smartphones, Windows Mobile offers a similar user experience as that found on a desktop PC.
WLAN
Wireless Local Area Network, is a group of computers and electronic devices connected together using the WiFi standard.
Xenon Flash
A Xenon flash is a very bright light, much brighter than LED which is commonly found on digital cameras and a small number of camera phones.  It allows for higher quality pictures to be taken in dim lighting conditions.
